Super H Amp Gauge Fluttering

My 54 Super H was not charging. My wiring harness was shot. I put a new harness on. Checked the generator out. It appeared to be good. Cleaned all the surfaces and made sure it was grounded well. Put it all back together and it charges, but when I throttle up the engine it shows a charge but the amp gauge flutters instead of staying steady. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

Might be the voltage regulator. Might be the gauge itself. I've got 2 Hs that do the same thing. Been that way for over 10 years.

The current flowing from the generator/regulator is by nature electrically "noisy". If the ammeter is underdamped (and they often tend to be as they age...) it is simply sensing/displaying the noise. The ammeter on my '53 Super H does this.

Try temporarily grounding the F terminal at the voltage regulator. If the ammeter swings near full charge and remains fairly steady with the engine running at full throttle, there is no problem.

I agree with Bob and Rusty.
There is (when new) a small gob of some resin on one of the needle pivots. This gob is almost ageless from the point of view that it will last for a long time, and it lasts for 30 years. When gone it lets the needle swing harmlessly. If it hardens in place the needle stops moving. Replacing the gauge will "fix" it, or live with it. Jim
