C301 Head Might Be A Crispy Critter....

Can anything be done to fill in the severe pitting on the machined faces to the exhaust ports on the side of the head? I really don't want to give up on this head, as the tractor it's on is fairly original & low numbered.

Mike

If the pitting is so bad that the material is uneven and no continuous surface is surrounding the port or ports, it is still machinable. any milling center or head machining machine can surface the ports flat. If the pits are not connected to one another they will probably not cause an issue Show us a photo. Jim

Sorry about the delay, there were a few changes to be made & I had to re-familiarize myself with Photobucket. Lets just hope my pics come through.

The worst of it seems to be the chip out of the casting, the pitting around the two middle exhaust ports, the loss of quite a bit of metal over the port in the second last pic & the burned up intake where the halves bolt together. Also, the exhaust manifold broke in two, while carrying it to my work area to get everything apart. The heat valve & workings are pretty much done, too.

Speaking of valves, from what I can see of them through the ports, they don't look healthy. At least to my lay eye. The intake valve stems are a bit gooey & the exhaust stems look like stalagmites. I'll get some pics up this evening.

Mike

*Pics 2 & 3, as well as 4 & 5 are of two different ports with different lighting. They are the ones on either side of the heat control box... thingy (where the two manifolds bolt together).

I do not see a problem that machining won't fix. The process should just take out the recessed areas around each port. It does not need to flatten the chipped bolt hole it is irrelevant as it is not a sealing surface. The manifold will likely need to be replaced, but you know that.
A reputable machine shop can make it very usable.
Doing a valve job on it won't hurt. Stay with low ash oil from IH or others. Jim

Glad to hear it's salvageable. As long as I have it out & at a shop, I'll have the valves gone over. A new intake & exhaust manifold are already on their way. Will do on the low ash oil, too. Also, I've been using the 93 octane gas with good results. Starts on the first try with no choke every time & doesn't run so rough.

Thanks,
Mike
