504 utl battery not charging

my 68 504 utility tractor loses charge. the batery is roughly 3 yrs old. must charge battery approx 10 to 15 mins then it starts. once off for sometime it will not start unless charged again. any ideas?

Charge the battery for over night at a slow charge rate 6 amps or so.
Start the tractor and run it at 3/4 throttle. Put a volt meter across the battery poles to see what the charge voltage is. (should be 14 volts to 14.6volts. If 12.6, the charging system is not working.
if the volts are good, the battery might be going bad, or is bad. If charging as above, shut off the tractor and disconnect one of the battery cables and measure voltage between that cable and battery post. If more than 150ma, it has a parasitic drain of some sort. If less than 150, it is another indicator of a bad battery.
If the drain is there, disconnect the alternator Bat lead and see if the drain goes away. if so the alt is failing. If no change, remove fuses, and or disconnect and reconnect things looking for that which stops the drain.
If no drain, measure battery voltage with the cable removed. if less than 12.3 that is also a battery issue. Let it sit overnight and check it again, if much lower, the battery is toast. Best of luck. We can help with the charging system if it is the issue. Jim

thanks for the reply. it may be a couple of days before i can take a look at. thought maybe the generator was not working , may need repolarized. bought new voltage regulator just in case.

You may just need new brushes. Does the AMP indicating light blink or go out when you increase the throttle? The light should stop blinking and go out at higher throttle but blink at idle. I had a similar issue and in generator found bad brushes and needed a good cleaning.
