mw 9 speed shift collar

I am putting a m&w 9 speed in a m farmall . The question I have is what holds the two prongs (the ones that go through the gears to the little gear that switches between high and low) in the shift collar? Mine just slips in and out of the collar there is a snap ring that is over the collar but doesnt appear to do any thing any help is appreciated

Retaining ring is supposed to go in the notches of the pins. 2 small allen head screws in the collar secure the ring in the grove.

Ok I got it. The ears that the snap ring go in where sheared off. I welded some back on and it works like I thought it should.
