W4 water pump packing

Does anybody know the size of the packing cord that is used? No ihc dealer where I live but got a quote including freight of $53.00 from a agriculture dealer. (seemed high to me for 3 inches of packing rope.)

It is not really a packing cord that is provided by IHC. It came in small split rings that are shaped to fit the shaft of the water pump--pretty much the same thing as packing cord. The IH part number is 45925DA. I keep pretty good record of my parts on hand and when I last bought them in 1996 the price was $2.62 each, including tax. $53.00 is ridiculous. There are very simple and were used in many tractors so I suspect that IH still has them. Google the part number and you will get lots of hits on places that sell them for less than $53.00. Note that you will need a few of them if you are replacing all of the packing in your tractor. Hopefully someone here can comment on how many you should order.

Packing is sold in split rings from CIH. 3 pieces should do the job if you're removing all the old packing. It won't hurt to have one or two extra, though.

Unless you're overseas or something, you're quote is a screwin' waiting to happen.

Problem with little stuff like this is a dealer could ship you one or fifty for about the same price. Years ago you could tuck a few of these in an envelope and ship a few for the price of 2 stamps. Today, the sorting machines destroy anything not flat in an envelope.
