Farmall H Questions?

I'm trying to help friend on his farmall H doing a Major O/H on it. He asked if I would help him and I said I would. Actually in this case it's blind leading the blind as he's not familar with the O/H nor am I. I have a question on the crankshafts? I"m finding out that there are (2) different sizes of crank shafts that put in the H"s? On Rod journals I calipered 2.250 O.D. I think his H is a 1940 and from what I seen of it so far it"s all original from when it was bought new? It has the high dome pistons which stamped std. Rod & Mains brg are coming out std.

What he plans on doing is going with a fire crater piston sleeve kit. I asked him today if I mic the crank for out of round journals he may need to have the crank turned? I must of hit a nerve or something cause he said it won"t need to be turned and just put (std) brg back in again.
Well I guess it"s not my tractor but to me if you was to spend that kind of money on a O/H and only Half A-** it to me you might as well left it alone! Anyways I"m going to ask this question as I don"t have a tolerence book in front of me on what you aloud as far as taper on journals (+ or -) limit.

I done 4 O/H on oliver tractors and only one of them only need the crank polished and gone back to a standard brgings. The others had to be turn.010. I guess I"m more fusey on things more that what he is. I guess I"ll keep my mouth shut and go on what he wants to do right or wrong.

Another Question: He has not taken out the cam yet but I told him it be best to put new cam bearing back in and he said he did"nt think it would need them. Question: How many cam bearings are in a Farmall H?

Thanks for your help on this subject!
Mike

Taper and out of round should be less then .001" undersize could be .001 and still use std bearings. Plastigauge them and be done with it. If more than .0035" I would turn it. Jim

If you are going that far have it ground. I have never had luck going in with new bearings on an old crank. He will surely be mad if he gets it done and the oil pressure is a little low or there's a knock of something. It never fails that the bearings were worn in to the crank so new bearings in it make it take a turn for the worse.

Sounds like he's wanting to have lots of power and no oil consumption with half of a job. That's not something I'd want to do again soon.

When these were newer and used a lot they were rebuilt frequently in the off season doing only the top end. That worked as it had been only a few seasons since it had been done. If I knew the complete history I would be more likely, but it's too old to work that way.

Something is missing here a 1940 crank in a H Farmall would not have a crank with no wear. No way a 70 pluss yr old engine would have a crank that measures like a new one.

Get a good mike & check it again.Mike it top to bottom with the crank all the way down as that is where it will be worn the most. Chances are it is worn some. As Jim said plastigage the old bearings and see what they are. Then check the thickness against a new one. You may need to put in .002 to get the right clearance, or get it ground to .010. Make sure you put in new mains. & plastigage them too..001 to .003 is good on both.

Remember that a caliper is not a micrometer! most will not go to the diameter of 2+ inch journals accurately. Jim

Jim
I sold my 0-6" micrometers a few months back and the only thing I can measure with is the calipers.
Your right calipers by no means is a way to check tolernces.

I guess it"s not going to much matter what it reads he"s not going to have it turn even if it"s .0035 out round.
Like the other guys says he probably will be mad if it knocks or carrys very liitle oil pressure.

infact he did a vac case tractor last fall and one of his boys helped him do it.
I asked what all he done to it and said he put in a step up kit in it and rod bearings only. plus had valves ground.

I asked why he didn"t put mains in a said they look good.
He had it running the other day when I was there and I could hear this knocking when running at an idol.
To me it sounds like wrist pin noise but not sure?
I asked if he ordered pin bushings for the rod and said the new ones had them in it.
He showed me his bill of sale and I couldn"t see any pin bushings in the kit.
Then I got to thinking maybe he confused with the pin that goes thru the piston and rod that the snap rings holds it in.
Sure enought he used the old wrist pin bushings that was still in the rods.
I don"t know? I try to help him out on the best way I"d would do it but he is very stubern!!

Maybe it will work out on what way he wants to do it? But i"m thinking just as long as the S*** won"t hit the fan if something goes wrong.
Thanks you guys for helping me out on this.
Mike
