IH 434, stalls, looses power, wont stay running

I have a IH 434

It starts, runs 1 minute and tries to stall

when we start driving it runs for 5 seconds to 1
minute and tries to stall, over and over

I can keep engine running most of the time by
depressing the clutch

I have tried to:

1) removed carb and cleaned it, looked ok
2) took off top of fuel pump and cleaned
3) drained gas from tank and replaced,it was clean
4) Took inspection plate off side to look at
governor, all looks ok, sprayed cleaner in there
to remove some of the oil, all looks like it is
moving, and springing back ok. I was told that
governor was a problem 5 years ago and that
cleaning out the gunk fixed the problem, I just
dont see any gunk in there now.

no fuel filter to be found.

I must be missing something

any suggestions would be helpfull

thanks
fred

With the bowl off of the carb, with the carb on the tractor, Gently hold the float up and turn on the fuel valve. Hold a open coffee can under the carb and lower the float a little. If fuel rushes out, the supply side is good and there is a blockage in the passages of the carb. If it just dribbles, it needs the screens lines and sediment bowl cleaned. Jim

thanks

I will give that a try
Im not sure how much fuel will come out
it is pumped to the carb with a fuel pump
I guess I can turn it over while I try it

As a caution to all reading this
I will do it outside
a friend burned his barn down this way when a spark started the gas on fire

thanks

thanks for the reply

sounds starved for fuel

I just have not figured out where
to my surprise no filter or screen to be found

thanks for the post
this helps me think it out

hello

thanks for the reply
I will look at the fuel to the carb then try electrical

I did not even consider anything electrical

truthfully im not sure what a condenser does or how to test it. Google wasnt much help, I will look more into it

when the engine is trying to stall it does sound a bit like it is missing. i will start by checking if the plugs are all firing

thanks for the suggestions

I would try first removing the air cleaner hose to the carb, this will tell you if the air filter is plugged, if this makes no difference, I would then try turning the main jet on the carb all the way in (gently clockwise) when it bottoms out, then back it out 3-1/2 turns, start the tractor if the condition improves & it stays running idle it up to around 1/2 throttle then slowly back the main jet out 1/4 turn at a time until the muffler just starts to show a little black smoke, at this point turn it back in a 1/4 of a turn, everything should be golden.
If turning it out makes no difference in how it's running then it a fuel supply problem, float setting, sediment bowl, or fuel supply restriction.

If the fuel side of things all check out ok, next time it stalls immediately lay your hand on the coil, if it is too hot to touch then the coil has went bad, if it is just warm it is probably OK.
I would then remove the distributor cap and check the condition of the points, if corroded looking remove & file the contact points to bright shiny, re-install & carefully re-set the point gap ( takes a little practice). Minor timing adjustment may be needed after re-setting the points but it should run reasonably well. Keep us posted on your progress.
If all this fails to make any difference there are more serious issues present, Valve clearances, timing gears, or possibly something so simple we all tend to overlook it, loose wire connection, crossed ignition wires etc.
