230 Binding Steering After Worm Wheel Replacement

I busted my worm wheel a lonnnng time ago. Finally got the thing back together last fall. Put everything back up and it now turns with the sort of binding that you get on something like an old car where you tightened the nut on the steering box too tight. That is exactly how it feels anyways. I did unhook the front wheel attach points (wide Front End) to verify it isn"t that (as I had been hoping). Prior to layup I had no binding of any sort, just broke the teeth off the wheels. I looked in the gear oil box through the top filler plug and it has oil in it but it"s down over an inch beyond that I am clueless why this has the hitchy binding steering suddenly. Thanks.

The gear you replaced needs to be positioned (up and down with shims to give near zero backlash, but not pressure contact. If it was put together with the old shims it might just need resetting the thicknesses to assure free movement with mimimal wheel looseness. Jim

Thanks Jim. I doubt I'll have to look further. I never had a really good book and nothing I have specified anything beyond the stick diagrams. I put it all back together just like it came apart using the good used replacement set of wheels. Actually I don't even remember seeing any spacers or shims other than the bolt patterned gasket at the bottom but who knows as it's been 2 or 3 years. So tell me Jim exactly where are these shims, the top or the bottom? I have a feeling that whatever was in there never got removed in the first place when I pulled it. Can you still buy those shims or is it just easier to lap mine down on a piece of wed dry sand paper on a flat steel block? Spring is here time to get to it I guess.

you can get a good idea of where everything is by going to partstore.caseih.com and pulling up the parts diagrams.
