Stuck Valve

(quoted from post at 16:35:16 04/22/13) Any good tips on unsticking a engine valve without removing the head. 1937 Farmall F20

Remove the valve cover and use a good penetrant/atf on the valve stem, I have a plastic deadblow hammer that I hit em with. Just keep thumpin it and it will come loose. Then oil all the valve stems with engine oil while your in there. Replace the felt pad and wicks if they are in bad shape.

On an engine where a body can get to a valve via a spark plug hole (if its stuck open) I use a bunch of PB Blaster or Kroil or other penetrants and WD 40 etc etc and/or soak her with Diesel and Brake Fluid and Auto Tranny fluid etc etc and use a punch to veryyyyyyyyyy slowlyyyyyyy gentlyyyyyyyyy peck peck peck till she closes.

I HAVE NO IDEA IF THATS POSSIBLE IN YOUR TRACTOR just how I got it done in engines where that was possible

Take off the valve cover. use a nozzle straw on a can of liquid wrench or other juice, and spray the valve stems under the retainers where they dissapear into the guides. Use a plastic hammer to tap on the stemin the downward direction (Gentle tapping). Use two small pry bars nder the top coils of the valve spring to aid in pulling up on the stem to move it upward. Juice, tapping and repeated for as long as it takes. Jim.

what they are telling you should free it up. but if you plan to put it to work at plowday plan to pull that head someday, a lot of them I have had apart the bottom half of the valve guide is gone, especially the exhaust, and if thats the case you will have a recurring problem. you should be able to get it freed up and running so you can check everything out and get a better idea of what all you need to do to it before you start tearing stuff apart.

Thanks for the tips. I have already squirted ATF on the stem. Will let it set for a couple days and try tapping on it.

If I where you I would pour as much ATF down the exhaust as you can before it starts leaking out so that it gets a full soaking and let it sit say 24 hours to a week that way

I had one on a 15-30 that was really stubborn. I ended up pulling the spring and keepers and used a torch to heat the valve guide (not the valve). Then I used a slide hammer with a vise grip to work the valve up and down until it was reasonably free. I reinstalled the spring before the valve got too loose and then kept working and oiling it until it was completely free.

Followed directions from forum members of soaking with ATF and Liquid Wrench , then tapped with a soft hammer and the valve came loose.

Thanks for the advise.
