Hey fellas, I have a question for y"all. Tearing down a friends M
with a non stock block. Has a bolted on cover plate behind
thecarb on the block. As we were pulling the sleeves, I noticed
letters stamped on the deck on the left side of the cylinders.
1,2, and 3 all had the letter C stamped next to them. Those
sleeves pulled easy enough. Cylinder 4 had an A stamped
next to it, and that sleeve took a puller, a bfh, and a floor jack to
remove. Are these letters on the deck related to cylinder
sleeve fit?

Yes--However, most if not all kits you can buy don't take the letters into condisideration. I don't know if CaseIH sells ones that do.

Exactly. A is the smallest bore, tightest fit later letters are bigger. At the engine assembly station, IH used select fit and had different sleeves to use in each to assure correct fit. Almost all but custom sleeves (from a company like LA Sleeve)have a small range of real sizes near the mid point of the series. An hole labeled with an A will be very snug. Freeze the sleeves and heat the block to just able to touch it to assure getting it in W/O cracking the new Sleeve.
