856 Charging System Question

The batteries in my 856 seem to be in good shape and start the tractor well. I put a new alternator on last year. This winter the tractor started squaling the belt on the alternator if I ran the engine too fast. I started running it more this spring and the belt stopped squaling but after a while I could smell the batteries starting to boil. What component is bad in the charging system? Could it be the batteries?

Sounds like the alternator is "running wild" and this is overcharging the batteries. Cause is either a failed voltage regulator (most likely) or a fault (open or short) in the control wiring to the alternator.

I fought that issue on my 686 for two years.

Damned batteris were sulfated. Cranked good and appeared to be just fine.

A set of new batteries cured it.
