Cub valves stuck

I have been trying to get my dads 57 cub running. It has been sitting for aprox. 2 years in the garage. I've pulled the spark plugs and discoverd some of the valves are not working. How do I free stuck valves without taking the head off.

You could try removing the side cover on the engine block that covers the area when adjusting the valves. Squirt a lot of engine oil around the valve stems. If this doesn't work I would pull the head. Hal

I'll ad to El Toro's idea. A brake spoon used to adjust truck brake shoes might be able to be placed in the spark plug hole to push on the reluctant valve. be careful to not damage threads. Jim

I removed the side cover and was able to see which ones are not moving. I've been using penetrating oil through the open plug holes. I can move the valves but they are still sticky. Going to let them sit and try tomorrow.

Also: Along with that motor Oil You squirt in there, I have used Kerosene , Put some in a Sqirt bottle... Spray it liberally...It's like WD-40,and will let that oil "Seep" on in, and alot cheaper per use.. Larry

Valves are starting to move one a a time. I'm probably going to have to change the oil before running the engine, Which grade do you recomend for this machine?

Got the cub back together today and fired her up. It's purring like a kitten! Thank you everyone for your advice. It helped me tremendously. One more thing... should i use a lead additive to the gas? Not sure what this new ethanol gas will do to this machine.
