400 Disk Brake dissasembly

I am stumped. I cannot remove the inner brake disk surface for the life of me. Have used a small chisel, small hammer, then a BF Sledge Hammer and BF Chisel.

please tell me this is not bolted on the inside and should come apart. Need some moral support and tips.

Trying to get the brake surface disk apart to get at the seal to replace it before I refill the rear end.
Thanks

Chuck

I have got them appart using two very thin screw drivers one from each side, then going to something thicker. That o ring in between can get real hard and does not let go easy.

why are you removing it? You can rebuild the brakes to better than new leaving it on there.
Smooth it up with an 80 grit flap wheel on your angle grinder.

If you have a slide hammer that you can fix to the end of the splined shaft, where you have a shiny bolt screwed in there now, you should be able to pull the bull pinion and that seal housing/brake disc together. There's nothing holding it from the inside. The seal housing has a large o-ring on the outside circumference that is holding it in with the help of many years of buildup.

He said he wanted to get at the seal.

Just drive something like a beat up old screwdriver in about three different spots. It is just 0-ring and rust holding it in .

Just an o-ring & age holding it together. Should be an indentation or 2 to help get started. Just be patient; an air hammer with a sharpened chisel point will help separate the 2 parts.

Do not try to take the bull pinion carrier out or major damage will occur unless the bull gear has been removed.

Something simple out of stuff laying around works for me. Just removed 2 yesterday, They were easy, one hit on one side and two on the other. Some tuff ones take 4 or 5 hits to move.
Sometimes if you have a extra old brake disc that can work by using a big pry bar. When prying on one side of the disc it will wedge on the shaft and pull the plate out. Use block of wood or whatever between the pry bar and housing to get the best distance for the pry.

Thanks all for the comments.
This tractor has been one of the worst I have ever worked on to get stuff apart. No matter what you should be able to get apart, there is no way to do it without destroying bolts and castings.

Did end up getting the inner brake housing off, but it shattered in the process. Thanks for the tips for future reference.

I found some inner housings on EvilBay, and they are headed my way.

Does anybody have a part # for the seal on the outer edge of the housing?

Thanks
