Drawbar repair

Is it fair game to weld up the egged-out hole in my 966 bull tongue or will it make the end brittle and cause problems? Seen lots of old ones built up but they didn't have to bear the same kind of loads that the bigger tractors do. Thanks

Generally, drawbars are of alloy steels to make them tough. Welding will upset the heat treat, and you will probably lose strength.

I don't think you have much to loose. Try it. It may weaken it, but you are looking at replacement anyhow.
Don't weld a bunch at a time- to keep the heat to a minimum. I think You'll be fine.

I wouldn't worry about welding it. I worked as a machinist for 40 years and made a few draw bars out of hot rolled steel. Never had any problems with bending or breaking. Just made sure it was the same dimensions as an original. IMO

make a bushing the right ID and length, from treated steel. Then drill the drawbar bore for it's OD , tap it in there and then weld it in.

Unforgiven, OR.... Chop-saw the Drawbar off at the forward most point of the egged out hole. Then swing by your local machine shop and get them to drill a new hole for you!I bet you will be better satisfied with that result that welding up the hole or a weld bushing. Hope this helps!

When I had that problem, I took it to a machine shop and it cost me $10 to have a new hole bored in it. I had extra unused holes on the front of the drawbar so by moving the drawbar back 1 hole on the front the PTO distances stayed the same.

DITTO to all below comments.

Have welded up my draw bar with just regular steel .035 MIG wire . Had BOTH wore out holes where the pins go AND divots wore out where the draw bar had been rubbing on the the U bar its whole life!

I use it regularly and 13 years later it still has not broke! ;)

Get a brass rod the size of the desired hole, place it in the drawbar, and weld around it. Weld won't stick to the rod, and once it cools it will fall out leaving you a fresh round hole.

As long as you don't get the drawbar smokin' red hot, you won't compromise the strength.
