farmall c generator

Ihave a c that i just redone. I left it with the 6 volt system positive ground system. THe problem is I could not get it to charge. I polarized the system checked the grounding, my wiring and found a trouble shooting guide on this sight still no luck. SO I took the generator and regulator to a shop and they tested both and said the regulator was bad. put everything back on including new regulator and
polarized the system and still does not work. If you turn on the switch ammeter shows discharge. When you start the tractor it shows discharge for a little while and returns to zero. If you turn on the lights it shows lots of discharge but eventually read zero. Any ideas or help would be appreciated. I am out of ideas unless the generator really isn't working. Thanks for your help

i had a simerler problem. i changed over to 12 volt, and no charge. took the alt in to get checked,(new one from that shop) and he couldnt understand. so many atemps but nothing. tightened up the fan belt, witch wasnt slipping any more, wa,la, then it was charging. i admit, stupid mastake. just saying, it can happen. good luck.

Blunted may have it.....a slipping generator belt will give exactly the symptoms you describe.

Before you do anything else check/tighten the generator belt. Also the fan belt if the generator is driven off the fan hub!

I agree to check the belt. If there is 7 to 7.2 volts across the battery terminals when running at 3/4 throttle all is well. that is a good charge rate. A properly operating VR will move the charge to near zero when fully charged. Jim

I agree with my sparky buddies, check the belt and its tension,,,,,,,Polarize once more just to be safe,,,,,,Insure the genny has a good frame ground (maybe run a ground jumper from gennys case to batterys grounded post),,,,,Try dead grounding the gennys FLD post at fast RPM n see if she charges then??? If so but NOT otherwise, the VR may not be well grounded or is bad or mis adjusted or the wires bad from FLD on genny to FLD on VR.....

Sounds like you already tried my troubleshooting procedure right?? Its Para 5 shows how to tell if non charging is a Genny versus a VR problem and has a Motor Test for the genny itself

I had some similar problems on my Super C tractor. Ended up rewiring it to clean up bad connections and burnt wires and mouse chewed wires in the system. Then went through 3 regulators before buying one that worked properly. The Cheap, non-functioning new voltage regulators offered for sale from the Case/IH dealer can drive a person nuts trying to find out what is wrong elsewhere in the electrical system. So, check all of your wire connections, and recheck that your "new" voltage regulator is good.
