governor weights and timing

will worn governor weights caus the timing to flux back and forth? put new springs in ,but not the weights. thanks for all the help.

The governor runs the carb. The only way it would affect the timing is if the rpm varies. Is your mag/distributor worn ?

Greg

Assume it is the 113-123 series engines:
probably not, the most common issue is bad distributor (or mag) bushings. The next is loose gears in the front cam drive system. Jim

If the RPM is constant, then the governor is not part of the issue. The governor controls the throttle plate, the timing is controlled by the distributor.

thanks, guys. it is a 113 C. can you get the nessasery parts for the dist, or you have to buy a new one? and thanks for the info.

Check the side to side play in the shaft. It needs to be at or less than .001" (not in out)
If the shaft is worn, it needs a rebuilt or new. A bushing can be put in by a competent motor shop. Jim

There are 2 gears in the dist. that may be worn to the point of almost stripping over. That could cause your problem.

Those little gears are available as I got some recently but forgot where. Auto - electric shop should have the bushing.

Any "slop" in the entire throttle control assembly (govenor bushings, throttle linkage, throttle shaft, etc) will cause errant behavior in throttle response. Add in weak springs, and results are unpredictable.

Check each bushing point for wear and slop. repair/replace accordingly. The weights themselves will also have a certain amount of influence on throttle response if the pivot holes are worn.

Like any relatively close tolerance application, when worn, it does nto perform as it should.

I believe that he was referring to the advance weights in the distributor not the governor weights. If the advance weights are worn they may affect the timing advance.
