Famall H Stuck between gears?

I have a farmall H that seems to be locked between gears in the field with a rotary mower attached. It starts with the clutch in but when I let out the clutch it stalls. What might be wrong, and what can I do?

Punch the pin that holds the shifter out. Then remove the shifter. Look down the hole and line the three rails up in the middle position. Reinstall shifter and try to make square shifts.

When you have time, rebuild the shifter to something like this.

Take the shifter out of the tower on top of the trans cover. There are two plugs that must be removed to allow a pivot pin to be pushed out (might take some wiggling an movement of the lever as the pin wear can allow steps to be generated on the sides of the pin).
Once out, the shift rails are visible in the hole (use a good small light (LED lights are great)
Use a long screw driver to realign the shift rails to the middle (neutral position). The tip of the shifter wear, and the pivot pin wear combine to allow it to travel where it should not go. The tip is .3 inches wide and close to 3/4" front to back with slightly rounded lower corners. (pictures are in the archives)
Welding it up and grinding to size works wonders. Jim

If your pin is worn there is a fellow on ebay who makes new ones that are just ducky, I put one in my 300 and it made a huge difference in the shifting. Cost about $20 last year. It is called a sloppy shift repair kit or something like that.

I have only taken the first plug out and then pushed the second out with the pin. It worked for me, but probably wouldn't if the pin was really worn.

Tip: If the tractor is not sitting on level, hard ground you may find the shifter rails cannot be moved by prying with a large screwdriver. This is on account of torque load on the transmission gearing. If so, do this:

Jack up either rear wheel just clear of the ground. Then rock the wheel forward and backward a bit (it need only move a small fraction of an inch at the rim). The shifter rails should now move easily.

You can also get a good look at what"s in there by removing the belt pulley, or it"s delete plate. Check on eBay for Sloppy Shifter Fix, it works great.

Had the same problem with our 460. It happened twice and woas stuck in 5th gear while the shifter was in neutral. As soon as you put it in gear it would stall. We bought a sloppy shifter fixer for $25 on ebay and it fixed it easily. Im not sure how hard it is to change on the H.
