Non smoking MD

Plowed with MD for about 7 hours yesterday using 3-14 three bottom. Plowed mostly corn stubble and some sod. Not hard plowing. The tractor did not seem to notice the plow was behind it. No smoke to very little in a couple of tough spots. Is this normal? I would have expected to see a little more. I was plowing in 4th most of the time.

Sounds to me like it is working just fine.If you have plenty of power, you should be good to go.Generally lots of smoke = wasted fuel.

Don't jinx it by even asking that question! Next time you try to even start it you will have nothing but problems and then when you finally get it going it will smoke like a locomative! LOL Just kidding! Enjoy, sounds like it runs great!

If plowing in 4th, you must be in styrene beads or dry sand! That is a 2-16 tractor in most soils. Light soils with a 3-14. BUT this is in third and second, not 4th. What are you pulling for a plow, how deep, and in what soil. No smoke is good smoke. (always let it run for 3 minutes or so at idle before shutting it off. Jim

Mine will pull 3-14 in decent ground, but not until I had the head rebuilt.

these ihc tractors should have only a light grey hazz in the exhaust when pulling. if you see black smoke you are pulling to hard.
with that plow should be 3rd gear. pulling 3x16's would be 2nd- 3rd gear depending on soil. a good tuned up super m will pull in a 3x16's in forth gear as a show off thing but its not a working field gear.

I did a lot of plowing in clay ground with a 1946 MD and 3-14 plow. Mine never smoked either. But I only plowed in 2nd gear let alone 4th gear. My MD is still running good even after having owned it for 40+ years. Never pulled it when cold or shut it off when hot. But I don't plow with it anymore. Al
