what is the best manual to service the 460 fuel problems.Even when it starts it has low power and eventually shuts down when it warms uyp

as a starters the fuel filters should be changed. that's a cause right there. don't need a manual for that. its just cleanliness and bleeding them which is straight forward.

Yes I know that,This thing has had a engine rebuild new injectors, glow plugs and pump work. But nobody has stayed with it over the course of 5 yrs. I want to help the owner out and I think I need some info on timing injector installation pressures etc.. reading over past posts i realize they are a hard starting engine to begin with.

If you get it running, no matter how poorly, the only reason it will shut off is lack of fuel or air. Static timing is 3 degrees btdc. It has a load advance on pump and you need a window on timing cover of pump to check that while running. Pretty hard to just tell you how to check it if you are not familiar with those pumps. Two problems that you might be having is, the fuel hose between filter and pump. They rot and collapse and let very little fuel to pump. Other problem is originally,(hard telling what an old beast like that has anymore) they have a ball check valve in the fuel return under fuel tank. It can get clogged or partially clogged and then engine will run a while and die. You can eleminate fuel return question completely by removing return line on top of pump and see if it will keep running that way.

When you say the the engine slows down and stops when it gets warmed up, It is possible that the plastic ring inside the injection pump that holdes the governor weight retainer together may be falling apart pluging up the return circuit. As the engine is running the pressure builds up inside the injection pump and prevents the pumping plungers from moving out as far as needed to get a new charge of fuel. A simple test is to loosen up the small timing window, on the side of the injection pump, as the engine is slowing down, allow some fuel to escape. If the engine speeds up you found the problem. You only need a screwdriver to preform this test.
Let us know what you find. Good Luck

well you have to give us more info , how do we know what you have done or haven't.
but it also can be the check valve under the tank also. what are you talking about timing injector pressures.
that is a crock of bs saying they are hard starting! those engines start with 2 revolutions of the crank when in good condition.
I have a 660 here that I overhauled and just warm glow plugs 40 seconds and "touch" starter button and its running.
plus you need a person that is familiar with this engine as no joe of the street can just come over and know what to do.
I have been around these engines for like 45 years.
and I do my farming with these engines in the diff tractors from the 340 to the 660. all the same engine.

I dont know why but the d282 starts (and runs) better than the d236. I dont know how many I have overhauled over the years but when a customer asks my why his 460 starts hard I always tell him that the 460 diesel is the only tractor IH built that came from the factory with a log chain in the tool box. The chain had a part number on it and most guys had to replace it at least once!

Thanks everyone for the posts, alot is lost in my typing ability. I will figure it out eventually with help from guys who own them.

Frustrating engine. It has a shorter stroke and therefore is compressing less air into near identical space as the 560 engine. They claim compression ratio is the same but I think if you CC the combustion area you will find it near identical and thus lower comp ratio. Now, throw in the sick starter on a 460 and you have a poorer starter. If you adjust valve recession to the latest specs in book. .010 recession and use the IH midget nozzles they start much better. I have been tempted to try different starters but I never was able to get to that point but I hear that some guys did.

I forgot one other thing, the 460 uses a smaller plunger in injection pump so it does not deliver as much fuel at cranking speed either. Does not pop that nozzle as good. That is also I always wanted to do was try the pump from a 282.
