cooked coil

Good afternoon .Yesterday I put the the 12 volt charger on my 300u battery, pos to pos and neg to neg . I came back 2 hour later and noticed a fluid on the floor, I traced it to the coil which was very hot. I disconnected the charger, battery and coil.I then took the coil off and shook it and could hear something ratting inside . The system was totally changed by the previous owner. It is 12 volt pos ground, with a large starter button, no selinod , with a generator and the original voltage regulator . WHAT WENT WRONG. Thanks for any ideas .

Ignition was left turned on and as Roger said your points are bad also and maybe the condenser. You got lucky the coil did not explode and make one heck of a mess. I have had more then one coil explode from leaving the ignition turned on

I agree with the post below, you must have left the ignition ON and with or without a charger in place that can overheat the coil and possibly leave some carbon on the points. However it can get warm and still be okay butttttt that rattling sound dont sound good to me lol it may be fried

If its a 12 volt tractor you can use EITHER:

A full 12 volt coil (NO Ballast required)
which may be labeled "12 volts" or

"12 volts NO Ballast required" or

"12 volts NOT for use with external ballast
resistor" etc etc

OR you could use a 6 volt coil PLUS an external series voltage dropping (12 to 6) Ballast Resistor. But Id opt for a 12 volt coil no ballast needed

NOTE if its Pos ground the coil needs wired - to Ignition switch and + to distributor

Got it???
