With the weather being nice today I pulled the head of my A to disassemble and take to the machine shop since I keep having head gasket sealing problems. After taking the valves off I see they have alot of carbon build up and would like to clean them, if I should while they are out. The motor had good compression before I pulled the head so I know the valves are still sealing well. In fact it looks like thy may have been lapped or ground since one cylinder had different color keepers.

Your local auto machine shop probably has a set fee for grinding the valves and seats. I also would have the cyinder head checked for flatness as it may need milled and check for cracks. Hal

If the valves are seating good I have used a rotatory wire brush to clean carbon if its not real bad.

the machine shop will disassemble throw valves and head in the "gunk" to soak before working on it. its a standard procedure. don't forget to take the valves with you as the machinist will give you the update on valves and seats and guides.

They will also look at the thickness of each valve and if are near 1/32" in thickness they will replace them. Hal
