Farmall H 1st gear noise

My H has developed a noise in the transmission that I cant understand. When the shifter is lightly brushed against first gear without the clutch in its makes a sound like gravel tumbling around in the tranny even while it sits in neutral. Pushing the clutch stops the gravel noise.

Some other symptoms exist but I don"t know if they are related or not.

1. When put in 5th gear, it only partially goes in and pops back out when you let out on the clutch.

2. When the PTO is disengaged it still spins at a high revolution as if its engaged. I know they tend to spin a little but this one is spinning far faster than any of the other tractors I have.

Any help would be appreciated.

The answers in order:
The driven gears in the transmission are sliding into mesh with the drive gears. Pulling the lever into a gear position with the clutch pedal up, causes those teeth to smash into each other (not good) they resist this smashing with noise and little pieces of them are splintered off into the oil. Do not do this.
Fifth gear is a direct coupling of the input shaft to the output shaft. (no gears involved in the coupling, just splines on the 4th fifth slider. It is worn out from the above smashing into gear. It ill not work until the slider and input shaft and intermediate pilot bearing are replaced.
The PTO may be gummed up on the inside or the shifter for it is not working. If you can turn it with a pipe wrench while the engine is off and the tractor is in gear, it is probably gust gummed up. Using it with a mower (with a overrunning clutch) will get it to be operational. If broken it will need to be removed (also easy. Jim

Thanks for the info. To clarify on the first issue, the shifter jumps around in neutral as if something is hitting it. The noise comes and goes while in neutral. When the shifter is laying to the left in neutral what is causing the shifter to jump around aggravates the noise when it brushes first gear but the noise is there on and of anyways. Its also there in gear. The tractor never made any noise until we split it and restored it. When we restored it we added a belly pump and belt pulley to it as it didn"t have them when we bought. the tractor. We never tore into the tranny because for the couple months we had it un-restored it never acted up.

The detent ball and spring in the first/reverse slot (and possibly others) may have rusted weak or broken. The balls of the detent may also be rusted stuck in the little bores they move in.
If the belt pulley gear is meshed too deeply into the drive gear, it can make radical noise. It is shimmed using gasket thickness. The shifter lever pivot pin and tip geometry might need tightening up, Pin wear is very common. Jim

Here is a video of the issue. This video is with the shifter in neutral

I would say there is a bent or broken 1st-reverse shift fork. (pulling the top off is probably necessary). Jim
