I have a 1949 Farmall Super A that was converted to 12 volts negative ground before I got the tractor. I installed a Pertronix 1442 EI kit yesterday and now the dust cover will not fit back on the distributor. The magnet has a high lip/flange on it that prevents the dust cover from seating under the lip of the distributor so the cap will not seat either. I left the cover off for testing and everything works as expected, but now I have no dust cover. My FIL suggested that it is not necessary now since I do not have any points to worry about. So should I leave it off or possibly grind down the top of the magnet to allow the cover to fit? Or is there another option? BTW, I had to tap the magnet down on the shaft to even get the rotor re-installed with the cap.

Thanks,

I dont like the idea of grinding the magnet, so given ONLY the 2 choices you offered, Id instead leave the dust cap off. That magnet passing by a coil of wire is what generates a small voltage pulse to trigger the soild state switch to turn off (open) and a tad of dust between the magnet and pickup coil shouldnt disable the trigger Ima thinkin, but Im rusty on electronics ya know having dealt more with Secondary AC Power Distribution in my later years of practice.

Thats my story n Ima stickin to it in the meantime

Many many distributors have no dust cover. Leave it out. The spring clips might need to be tweaked a little to keep it tight. Jim

Cut a hole in the dust cover. I had to do that for one of mine because the rotor was hitting the cap just a little bit and all the plastic dust froze up my advance.

OK, now I have option #3! That makes sense. I will just enlarge the hole on the dust cover to fit over the magnet. Thanks all for the input.

My Pertronix in my 140 has been doing fine since 2006 with no dust cover. I think it's been three years since I even looked in there. Might be time for a clean and lube.
