Small Miss on a 300

Durring the cold months my 300 will have a miss in it until it warms up, which can take a long time when it is cold out. Anyhow, I used it for about 6 hours straight running it pretty hard the whole time and the miss never went away. Prior to that I had put in my warm weather spark plugs so I don't think it to be a spark issue. I had used it so long and hard that I eventually ran it out of gas. The interesting thing was that about 5 minutes before it ran out of gas, the miss went away and it had power like I had not seen since last fall. Why did it run better on minimal fuel in the tank?

The carburetor is either set way too rich, or the float is either defective or way out of adjustment.

I agree with Rustyfarmall. The carb is probably set too rich.

I had a 350 that gave me fits for a couple months after the carb rebuilt. It was running so rich the plugs would foul with fuel and cause a miss. I kept adjusting it a 1/4 turn at a time just like the manual says until one day I just started cranking on it. After 3 or 4 full turns it suddenly quit missing and started running smooth.
