A transmission

My "project" Farmall A has a rattly squeally noise when idling in nuetral. I removed the cover and found the oiler gear was mostly missing. I can find no worn gears or bearings to cause the noise so before I disassemble the transmission to replace the oiler I would like to find the source of the noise.
The only gear driven in nuetral is the reverse idler. Have any of you farmall mechs had that problem?

Working on a Farmall 130 right now. Went into it thinking there was a bad topshaft bearing. Making rattling growling noises even in neutral. Only thing I found were some worn but not rough bearings and BADLY worn teeth on the oiler gear. Replaced oiler gear and all bearings. Have not fired it up yet to see if the noise is gone.

Get a new oiler gear from A&I (this site may have em). It is a nicely machined piece of steel instead of the POS pot metal gear originally in it. But it must have been worth something as it lasted almost 60 yrs.

The oiler gear has a bushing in the center that should turn freely on the bottom shaft. I have seen them sieze up, tight enough to move the tractor in neutral. That is probably the source of your noise.

A lot of those 60 year old gears are probably running in 60 year old oil, may be a factor.

The only thing left of my oiler gear is the hubso that doesn't even turn. I checked every thing over and the bearings on the input shaft seem smooth and tight. I oiled the gears and bearings and put the lid back on but I still have the same noise. I don't notice any noise when the tractor is in gear.
