By pass ameter?

Hey friends; I need to know if I can by pass the ameter and relay switch on a farmall m, I have ordered parts but it takes about a week to get here and can I run the tractor without this switch. The switch as you probably know is in the ameter box runs the light switch ignition switch.

You are painting your question with a pretty broad brush. Yes, you can run the tractor. That's the simple answer. depending on whether you have a generator or alternator and how it is hooked up would be the question. The current hast to have some path to go to or it can do bad things. State your question a little more clearly and someone will straighten you out. A stock M would have a separate switch for the ignition independent of the light switch.

Yes you can. Realize that my answer depends on your capability and understanding of electrical issues. With respect, there is serious danger of fire and smoke if wiring is not correct. If the existing has a non standard component (relay switch) which is not a normal part of the tractor, you must decide if the switch is also bad.
If the tractor is 6 volt generator based and positive ground, and if the reason that you are intending to do this is because the amp meter is open (does not conduct electricity) And the tractor is not suffering meltdowns in the wiring, just the amp meter is bad, just jump between the amp meter posts with a #10 piece of copper wire (bare is OK)
This should just duplicate the current flow to the battery and be fine. This assumes the Relay switch is good. Do not short the jumper wire to the amp meter mounting bracket.
If the tractor is Alternator equipped 12v. negative ground, the same jumper might be just fine.
If the lights must work while you are waiting for parts, the supply wire to the lights switch should go through a fuse (15amp) then to the battery side of the existing amp gauge.
A new wire to provide power to the ignition coil (assumes points and coil ignition, not Magneto.) can be attached to that same supply side amp meter post run through a toggle switch, then to the coil (or ballast resistor if so equipped)
If you feel there is an issue with other components in the electrical system, all suggestions are void. Unless you are confident in the ways of electrons, 500 amps will make a mess. Jim

Yes - you can bypass the ammeter. Simply remove the wires from both posts and connect them all together. (Be sure to tape the connection so it can't ground on the box!). Ignition, lights, etc will work normally.

However as a practical matter as long as the ammeter posts are solid, are not shorted to ground and and have continuity between it will pass current and the electrics will work even if the meter guts are smashed/missing.

Regarding your relay question a stock M has no "relay" other than the small relay(s) in the cutout or voltage regulator. Need more information on whether you are talking about non-stock starter relay (a solenoid), or something else.

I don't know what kind of ammeter your tractor has, but if it is like the one on my 300, I doubt that there is anything wrong with it that would affect the operation of the tractor.

The one on my 300 has a piece of aluminum for a conductor completely through the ammeter. If it were not conducting , I think you would see why.... as in burned up melted globs

Thanks so much for your reply friends, I am sending a diagram of how this ameter is connected, I am getting hot wires like there's a short and my lights are not working neither is the ameter itself. I don't understand it was working (the connections) at the time I brought the tractor home. the only parts I replaced was the starter relay and battery cables the starter does not have a ground. once I tried to jump this tractor it burned up my jumper cables, but I have had it running since then but only for a short time when I had to get my carbruretor rebuilt. since then I have had electrical problems, also I have had no problems starting this tractor it usually kicks right over even on the coldest days. I could really use some direction from this point of my sad story. thanks friends
