400 Farmall wont move

My trusty ol 400 is giving trouble and I can't
seem to come up with what might be wrong. It
starts good, shifts into each gear good but when I
let the clutch out, the engine labors then dies.
This is with the t/a lever ahead. With the t/a
lever pulled back, when I let the clutch out it
won't die but I hear a spinning sound coming from
the t/a area, and no effort to move the tractor.
The rear tires don't even try to move, and with the
t/a forward the internal resistance takes over
before the power even gets to the rear wheels.

Another note, the t/a has slipped for years, I
have just used it in direct drive, and have never
had an issue.

Also, I took the shifter off and verified that it
is not stuck in 2 gears, as I have had that happen
before too. Any ideas??

A couple possibilities come to mind (I've run into both this winter...)

1 - Rear end contains a large amount of condensation (water) and has frozen solid. Warming/draining the rear end will free it up.

2 - The brake plates have rusted and are stuck to the disks. Rocking the forward and back tractor should free them up. Or remove the brake covers and knock the disks free.

Possible causes:

1. Stuck in two gears. I know you said you confirmed this, but are you sure that it isn't stuck in THREE gears? All the shift fork slots would be aligned, but not centered.
2. Brakes seized up. Backing up should release them, though.
3. Big lump of ice in the transmission.

I go with ice in the rear end. Unthread that drain most of the way and see what comes out. I bet you get about three gallons of water.

This happened to me on my 300 this winter and the cause turned out to be that the pilot bearing had fallen apart and fallen down into the constant mesh gears and broke off some teeth. This was likely because I had not lined the TA housing and transmission when reassembling them and had thus damaged the bearing. I hope your fix is easier than mine turned out to be.
