In need of tractor mechanic near northern virginia. I have an IH 444 aprx. 1970. Gas. No power to spark plugs. Replaced points, coil, distributor cap and spark plugs. Tried everything. Seems no power going to distributor. I had 2 people look at it so far. Time for a mechanic. Any recommendations?

ok well ..start at plugs,if its not then then check and see if you can see spark at the points, then if no spark there then check and see if you have power to your coil then check if you have juice on both sides of switch when switch is on.. proccess of elimination..

run a wire from hot side of battery to battery side of coil. (hot wire)

this bypasses switch, etc.

it is obvious that if it starts, coil, points, plugs, distributor are all o k.

i am getting power to battery side of coil. I checked with meter. but there is no power going to distributor from coil. I have replaced coil twice. So, I don't believe it is the coil. I have set points many times. so, I don't think it is that. Any thoughts?

Either the condenser is bad or there is a coating on the points preventing the arc. With the power on you should be able to produce a nice blue arc by opening the points with a screw driver. If the arc is good verify timing and make sure the rotor tab is contacting properly at the top of the cap.

You should have voltage on the distributor side of the coil with the points open and no voltage with the points closed. Check for a short to ground in the wire from the coil to the distributor. probably shorted where the terminal bolt goes through the distributor housing.

No power is supposed to go to the distributor. The distributor grounds the coil to build the spark. When the points break the spark jumps. The distributor runs the coil, not the other way around.

take a spark plug and fasten a wire to the base, fasten the other end to a convenient ground, on the tractor, near the coil. remove coil wire from distributor and place on spark plug that you have just constructed. remove coil wire from the side of distributor, turn on switch, ground loose end of wire to coil, strike the loose end to ground, repeatedly, you should get a spark on the spark plug. if not, coil is bad.
