Hey guys, its finally warming up here in NY, I'm going to be putting the belly pump in the M soon and I was wondering, I know its a PITA to take that pump out so is there anything I should change like gaskets while I have it out? I'm thinking it better to replace the gaskets now rather than deal with a leak later...I've never had it in, its covered in old oil/grease/dirt so I do not know if it has leaks, thats why I'd hate to put it in and find out...any advice?

thanks, ~Anthony

They can leak, but many never do. We have an original SH and it has never been out and doesnt leak.
Were it mine (especially if it has oil in it yet)
I would look to see if oil has made wet and juicy runs down from the shaft seal and or the control rod seal. If either, I would replace them if not, I would clean it up and run it as is. Jim

Hey Big Tone, I'm a NYer too. Ulster Cty. There are three seals I would change: the one on the pump, and two on the front of the tranny (unless you have already done so) They're easy to do and the new neoprene seals will cure any leakage problems you may have. Just be sure the new seal is riding on an unworn part of the shaft and couplers.

There's not much to them. Replace the main housing gasket, port block gasket and input/ output shaft seals while you have it out so you dong ever have to worry about it again. Maybe $25 in parts...

Myself, I would take it apart not just for seals, but also to clean out the reservoir. No telling what kind of sludge and debris have settled in the bottom of that thing.

Would you do that even if it was sitting on the floor waiting to go in? I don't think I could do that. You could hardly have $20 in the project and you could be certain it wouldn't leak. Those leather seals weren't seals at all, they just slow the leak down.
