Great deal on a 656......maybe

Got a friend that has a beautiful 656 hydro diesel he wants to
sell. It's got the 282. Runs great. Motor only has 100 hrs since
restoration of tractor. It also comes with a German 310 with
about the same hrs on it that came out of a cotton stripper that
only saw one harvest. The 656 has a 2550 ih loader and new
tires. Only problem is the hydro is weak I think. He called me
today and said he just needed to get rid of it. All I know about
the hydro is that he told be when it gets hot it doesn't want to
shift. I'm not sure what he means by shift but it still seems like
a decent deal. He'll even throw in a 706 with new tires that has
a seized 282 with the deal. What do y'all think.

Roland Hydro in Ia will tell you $5K brought to them. There are some ex IH mechanics that can do them for around $3500.So if you think it is worth $6K + then it is fine.I buy some nice original tractors and they have to drive on trailer or I dont buy them as it will cost more than you estimate most everytime.

Read it again and the parts tractor is worth close to that usually $40 per H.P. throw in the tires and it would be a money maker or a cheap tractor.Good deals dont happen everyday so I would GET-R-Done as Larry the Cable Guy would say.No maybe here.

(quoted from post at 16:17:10 03/31/13) He says it is weak in foward, but strong in reverse. Think it's the valves. Or an internal leak. I think the unit is still good.

If that is the case there is a very good possibility that it is either the reverse check valve or a leak in the forward relief circuit.

I got an old agrden tractor 10 or so years ago with a snow blower and tiller plus the mower deck for 250 because it would run backwards faster than forward. Guy figured the hydro was shot. Changed the hydro oil and filter and the darn thing was fine. Not only did I use it year round but I had a plow and disk for it too.

So my first check would be valves and filter.
