i bought me a super m farmall the other day and was
wanting to make a pullin tractor out of it. does any
one have any ideas how much hp i can get out of it
and were i can drop some weight at so i can get down
in the 4500 class

Why would you want to ruin a good tractor by making a puller. The only thing pullers are good for after most people have used and abused them are scrap metal. Keep it the way it is and just pull in the stock class. Besides your tractor will have alot more value down the road. Just my opinion.

4500 is too light. It will pull like garbage because the weight distribution will be all wrong. What classes will you be pulling in? What rules will you be following?

I have a M all ready to go 6.5 stroke weights 4200. Will sell for $3500. Cheaper than you can build one for would do some trading on a Super M.

Think of it this way. Many of the pulling tractors my friends and I have built were made out of junk anyone else would have sold for scrap to be sent to china. So instead of wrecking good tractors we are making presentable loking tractors out of some one else's junk that no one would fix up. Didn't think about that did you?

well its my tractor ill do what i want to do with and i like to have big bore and long stoke and i have seen super m go out the gate in the 4500 class and like to put money into it if i can what i can do to it

it's simple, just ask around
$$$$$ = hp
Bore gives high end hp, stroke gives low end hp.
Strip everything off that will save weight. Oil bath air cleaner, PTO, battery box, lights, muffler, generator, fenders, ( now you are down to a basic parts tractor)
put an aluminum radiator in it, cut the stock drawbar to move the hitch point forward, and brace it off the PTO plate you had to install to cover up the hole where the PTO was at 17 inches. Put a K & N air filter on it.
Now you are ready to start on the motor, 450 block & head, stroked crank, overbore high comp pistons, reground cam, head work......( parts tractor less the engine now), Now it's tire cutting time...how many ponies you want??
Some places will let you pull, some won't, the places you can pull you will find competitors with much deeper pockets than yours, and also those who are just beginning to learn also.

It's fun...... don't get me wrong, I am not against it, just if you want to build a puller, go to quite a few pulls this summer, join a local puller club, find out the rules, ask around, try to find what other guys are running, what weight class & what they have to do between each class to get it weighed in correctlly, once you have a bit more "experience" you can figure what you want, and an idea of what it will cost. Many ponies can be squeezed out with very few modifications, that don't cost a lot, after that the prices really start to go up. I think you will find the advice above may come in handy.

I have pulled stock classes down that low and saw first hand what happened, but you saw it once at a fair so it must be true...

I have am M that weighes 3800# and I pull 4200-5200 and have room to put weights where I need them and I do really well with it. You will need to get pressed steel wheels and aluminm weight brackets and unbolt anything you don't need. Just remember that you can keep all the parts and change it back if you ever wanted to. You can call Pete @ CAPP Brothers to get light weight 9 bolt hubs (816-308-8879) they weigh 30#. As far as motor goes, if your pulling stock at that weight you can get by with a 450 block and cam and a 450 LP head. If you get it dialed in right you should have about 75hp.

It will all depend on where you pull it. Rules are different everywhere. There are guys out there who replicate parts with aluminum to get the weight down. A SM is not such a good choice. The gearing will be too fast. If you power it up and run against a pace tractor, you will constantly be fighting it. You wioll find yourself breaking traction by moving the throttle a lot. I started with a SM and it simply died like a dog when the sled hit it. My M with the slow 1st gear pulled much better, but hitching is really important. You need power, but not as much as you think. Good Luck.

I beg to differ. I set up a 45 M to pull in 4500 and did very well. Made 6 pulls the last season with 2 wins, 3 seconds and a fifth. Put me in fifth for points when everyone else pulled 10 more pulls than me.

I would guess it was paced rather than first gear only? I would guess that was my problem.

When I pulled in the mid-80's first gear
was all we could use. Only time I ever
used a different gear was in the field. I
was running 14.9-38's on 9" tin rims. Had
the wheels set in as close as I could get
them. In fact could touch the outside of
both wheels while seated. It worked for
me.

Must be gearing on the Supers. I could get NO traction. I actually do quite a bit better if I skip 5 and 55 as well. I can dominate in 7 and 75 and that is a lot more fun.
