Farmall 140 questions

Good evening,

I am a new tractor owner, our family has had Farmalls for years but I have never owned one myself.

I've been using it all winter plowing snow up here in the Colorado foothills.

It has been parked in the garage and this afternoon I noticed a bit of a pool under the front of the tractor. I looked at the fluid; it has some viscosity and smells a little bit like WD-40 or similar solvent/cleaner. Is this hydraulic fluid?

Before we purchased the tractor it had a Belden belly mower under it. I took that off and put the grading blade on the tractor. My guess is that having the tractor in 'snow plow' mode, I have used the hydraulic system more this winter than it has been used in the past 20 years.

How do I know that my hydraulic system is adjusted properly? How do I check the level on the system? What concerns should I have with a pool of hydraulic fluid on the floor?

Please advise,
Chris

If it's leaking that much, the source of the leak should be obvious. Go over the tractor with a fine-toothed comb in the area directly above the puddle, looking for fresh fluid.

How much you should be concerned depends on how much fluid is leaking, what kind of fluid it is, and where it's coming from. Regardless, it should be fixed sooner or later, preferably sooner.

Hydraulic fluid doesn't smell like WD-40 as far as I know. Maybe it's hydraulic fluid but I can't say just from your description of the smell.

There is a fill and level check plug for the hydraulics on the hydraulic block under the gas tank.

Hydraulic fill and level check is on the left side of the tractor at the
touch control unit, under gas tank. Are the bolts holding the
hydraulic lines at both ends snug? As said, origin of leak should be
fairly obvious above the puddle. Sure it's hyd oil?

Sounds like an OLD mixture of Antifreeze and water leaking. OLD fluid of that type would have a distinctive smell, and when a leak happens, it could leak enough to make a pool under the tractor. I'm going on a whim, but I presume you don't know Alot about tractors. Pictures would be great if you could get them, and then we could help you better. There are only 4 fluids in that tractor, Antifreeze/Water Mix (front), Hydraulic and Motor Oil (engine area), and 90 weight gear oil (rear area). The gear oil is similar to motor oil in sight but much, much thicker.
