H Charging Problem

I have been trying to resolve a charging problem on my 51H for over a year. Here are the steps I have taken so far.
1. I installed a new VR which I purchased from this site. It charged for a little while and then quit charging and the ammeter then showed discharge when running.
2. I took the VR and the generator to a generator shop and they checked it out. The genny is OK. The VR had a very fine wire which was no longer connected to its terminal point on one end. The shop felt this was the problem.
3. I checked all wiring and had a friend double check it. The wiring is exactly as shown in the parts manual.
4. I bought another VR from this site and installed it. At the suggestion of the generator shop guy, I also ran a wire from the ground post of the VR to the genny housing. The ammeter showed charge, so I thought the problem was resolved. After a few hours of running, it quit charging again. I opened the VR and this time the wire that had come off on the first unit was intact but the VR still will not control the charging circuit and the ammeter again shows discharge when running.
5. Although the genny shows good on bench test, it is a unit off of an M. Could it be too strong for the H VR, etc.
6. I have a distributor/coil setup and a 3-position light switch (O,B,D). It is a 6 volt positive ground system.

Can anybody help me resolve this perplexing problem? I am out of ideas.

Good high quality Voltage regulators are difficult to find. Cleaning between the contacts with very fine (600) paper can make them work. A generator with a internally shorted (not to ground) field will put high strain on a VR. Current in the field circuit when F is hooked directly to ground through a good amp meter (not the gauge) you should see about 2 to 3.5 amps or so with it running at 3/4 throttle. If more, the field may be bad. Jim

Regardless, it's not "too strong" for the VR. The generator and VR are exactly the same from the H to the M.

The cheap Chinese voltage regulators are notorious for going bad quickly. I went through three of them on my Super A in less than a year, and the tractor had less than 25 hours of run time on it.

Don't bother taking the generator back for "testing." Testing generators and alternators at the parts store is a joke. They're always "good" because the test really doesn't test anything... If it produces voltage, it's good according to the machine.

Try to find a USA-made voltage regulator. They're supposed to be better. I got one from RockAuto.com, came in a CarQuest box. The jury is still out.

I went through the same process as you. I bought a new regulator from Steiner (Chinese) and it worked for a short time and then only when I would hit it. I took the generator and regulator to the generator/starter rebuild place that I always get mine rebuilt at. The guy that runs the place is a friend of mine so I know he isn"t giving me wrong info. He said that the generator tested fine, but the regulator was intermittent. He ordered me a new US made regulator (about $70 instead of $38) and my system on my Super H has never been that good. Did you get the correct regulator listed for the Delco-Remy tag on the gen. And it the gen anoriginal one that came on the tractor or a replacement. Car Quest has regs that are built here in the US not imports like lots are ive been using them without any problems. Lots of listings have a one size fits all.
