Restoring a Farmall Super A but it is missing the distributor or mag how do you know wich one that it had is it an obvious thing that im not seeing or was it a serial number break when they started to use distributers?? Any help would be great guys Thanks!

So can I put either one on it and be ok I want to keep it original and i think i have a spare mag i could use

one way u can tell what was on it is if it still has the factory switch in it what kind of ignition it was ... if the push /pull swith has two places to hook wires it was a battery/points/coil ignition .......if it only has one place to hook a wire that was a mag. set up as all the switch had to do to cut it off was ground out the mag......IHSMOKE

I have the serial number break at 286,222 (mid-1950). Battery ignition was available from that serial on. By the book it was originally an option, but virtually every tractor from then on was built with it.

(quoted from post at 06:23:31 03/28/13) I have the serial number break at 286,222 (mid-1950). Battery ignition was available from that serial on. By the book it was originally an option, but virtually every tractor from then on was built with it.

If given an option, I would choose a good working mag ignition any day over a coil. No battery power required to run.

When you say spare mag, is it from a A for sure? If I recall, other tractors used a similliar looking mag but they turned in opposite directions. Someone else can verify if that is a concern or not.

If you go to a dist make sure you get an I-H one as Delco-Remy and Prestolite also had dists available. Good luck on the restro job.

Which ever one you choose whether a mag or a distributor you to bring No1 piston near the radiator to TDC on the compression stroke. Hal

Thanks for all the help everyone ive determined now that this tractor definetly had a mag and the one I have will fit it is off of an A Thanks Again!!

(quoted from post at 09:43:57 03/28/13) A,B,C,H,M, and W series ALL used the same mag only the Diesels ran counter clockwise.

The W9 gas engine also needs a mag turning the same direction as the diesels.
