My tractors have been setting in the shed since last fall. I need to change the oil in them. Should I just drain the oil prior to starting them or shoulld they be started and warmed up before draining the oil?

If they have not been started, just pull the plug and let drain/drip for a two or three hours.Fill with oil and go...BTW,fill the new/empty filter with fresh oil if possible.

the only time i drain without starting is on one that i bought that has been sitting for years. i then get it running then warmed up and do the oil and filter thing. otherwise the sediments are just sitting on bottom of pan. lots of times you can stick your pinky in the drain hole and feel the sludge.
myself i would start them first.

If your temperatures are above freezing and if you are concerned about condensation or coolant in the oil, you could crack open the drain plug enough to let any water drip out and re-tighten the drain plug when oil starts to come out. After that I'd wait to change the oil until the first time you run it enough to get the engine up to full operating temperature.

Drain it refill it and then run it. Why would you want to put all of the pan bottoms back into the engine. After a couple of hrs run time, change it again and do the filter that time.

The oil companies must really love you guys. Change what's probably brand new oil and then change it again??? That's a lot of perfectly good oil going down the drain and I'm sure you've got better places to spend your money.

How many hours do you put on the tractor in a year? On mine I can't justify changing the oil even once a year. They just don't get run that much, less than 10 hours a year.

I can't see dumping clean oil and throwing it away... Let alone, dumping clean oil a SECOND time after a short run just because the tractor's been sitting.

Right or wrong, I don't give it a moment's thought. If the radiator's up, the worst that's in the crankcase is a little condensation, which will boil off after the engine's been running a few minutes. Check the radiator, check the oil, turn on the gas, and pull the starter rod. VROOM!

I am asked this question often by the collector car guys who store their cars over winter. My take is, put it away with clean oil and new filter , then you wont have the acids and by products of combustion in there all winter. The most that will happen over winter is some water condensation which will quickly be evaporated out when you run it again in the spring. I think doing it twice is not necessary. IMHO
