what is the correct wat to shut down an MD? do you shut it down on diesel or do you switch it back to gas and shut it down that way? Never been around one and now I am thinking about buying one. Thanks Pete

I shut mine down on gas. Others on the site shut theirs down on diesel. They have many strong words against shutting down on gas. The manual says to shut down on gas. I feel my tractor restarts better when shut down on gas. To each their own. IMO if you cool it down properly you won't crack a head with either fuel.

I shut mine down on diesel. Idle for at least 4 to 5 minutes, or just run not doing work. This lets the cylinder head get normalized in temp. I believe the engine is able to cool itself better on diesel, and the starting valves remain closed where they can stay cool. Jim

I've had several IH diesels of this type and have always shut them down on gas. I run them until they shut down (when shutting off the switch) without dieseling in the gas position. MOST IMPORTANT THOUGH is to make sure you ALWAYS switch them back to the diesel position. If you don't you'll eventually warp a valve.

its a diesel tractor so it gets shut down on diesel. diesel at idle runs and cools way better than on gas at idle.
gas is for starting the deisel engine. absolute no benefit to switch to gas. actually when those little valves open back up on gas i believe they would get a little hotter than just leaving them seated in the head on diesel. then you have to remember to close them after you shut it down on gas. and that gets forgot about at times. then those little valves will warp. then you have no more diesel engine , as head has to come off.
