FARMALL CUB ELECTRICAL

I have a 57" farmall cub that i am restoring. I have everything electrical replaced. The 6 volt battery is weak, but still testing 6 volts. It will not turn the tractor over. It will just bump the starter and thats it. If i hook up a jumper pack it will turn it over like a sewing machine. Is my problem just a weak battery? Will that hurt anything with the 12 volt jumper pack? Someone sail replace the 6 volt battery with a 8 volt. It will give me the extra juice to start it with.Has anyone ever tried this?

First: a 6v battery usually has an at rest voltage of 6.3. If it is at 6, it is not charged up. First step is to check the electrolyte level in the cells and add distilled water to the internal fill rings. Then charge it with a 6v charger. A cheap charger with 6 amp capacity is fine.
If it takes a charge it will spin the engine well and you will be happy.
If it fails to charge, the battery will need to be replaced.
Do not get an 8 volt, it is a miserable bandaid that neither works well nor can be charged well (no chargers for it)
You will possibly explode the 6v battery jumping it (just don't)
If it is charging the battery voltage will be about 6.8 to 7.2 volts at 3/4 throttle. If not let us know and we can fix that as well. Jim

Try replacing the long cable from the battery to the starter with HEAVY DUTY BRAIDED welder cable. You'll be amaized what a difference it makes in the starter's preformance on a Cub. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

This might or might not help, but a ground cable run directly over to the starter mounting bolt will eliminate lots of resistance, going through all the frame comnnections and joints. Worked wonders on my Farmall.

Sounds like a new battery is in order. When you use the starter feel the connections on both ends of ground cable and the one going to the starter where its warm is sign of bad connection or bad end on cable. I s yoour starter in good shape it mite need new brushes or bearings and even a new Bendix. I would start with a new battery. Do you have another unit using a 6v. Trade batts that will tell ya in a second if its bad. Working system on a 6v Cub will spin engine over great.

If you are restoring did you clean all electrical connections of new paint down to clean bright metal? You can't get 6 volts through paint and primer. That, and large enough battery cables are essential.
