574 with c200

I have a international 574 with a C200 engine. Engine makes a tick or clicking noise. Speeds up as you increase on the throttle. I had it at a repair shop They inspected the top of the engine and told me they thought it was a crank bearing. I have now brought it home pulled the motor, pulled the pan off and I don"t see anything. No dis coloring and everything seems tight. My plan next is to pull the head. Take the pistons out and see what is going on there. Has anyone ran across this one C200 engine? Is there somewhere else I should be looking. This engine has a balancer on it and all seems fine with that"s well.

I have a 74 model 574 gas. It does that too. I gave up worrying about it.Seems to run ok. Hope you find it so you can tell me what it is.

Sure it"s not just a lifter? At about 1500 hours I had to adjust the valves on mine, they"d gotten so bad it was barely running.

If the engine has over 2000 hours you may have piston slap. Now that you have the engine down, measure the bore and your pistons. If worn the best fix is to rebore and put in oversize pistons.

Well it sounds like I am taking the head off. Thanks for the input. I did not think of piston slap. I will take the head off and let you know what I find. If someone thinks of anything else please post.

Well I found it. There was the top of a screw wedged to the top of the piston. So now what. I don"t see any damage to the head or piston. What do I need to do ?. If anything?

Here are a few pictures of what I found.
Next question where did this thing come from? Had to come from the intake side. maybe carb? Any other ideas?

The carb throttle plate and choke plate can loose screws, or screw heads. I would be sure to check those. The chances of a screw head falling into the muffler and dropping into a cylinder are much lower, but sure a possibility. Run it . it is fine. Jim
