No fire and no crank. Seems to be a short. Removed starter cable and I have continuity between ground and the starter post. Any ideas? Thanks

Are you sure the starter hasnt locked up. Just remove the starter and bench test it would be the way to go. If you have a short the sires will burn up.

Locked up starter.Loosen the starter bolts and wiggle it a bit.My SM does that sometimes.Been that way for over 25 years.Even after a couple rebuilt starters and a new ringgear.I carry a 9/16 wrench in the toobox.Only takes a minute....

Is this a fresh paint job?sometimes paint doesn't allow continuity or a proper ground.. let us know what you come up with

OK pulled it and I can move it by hand. Bench testing yields nothing but sparks. Its only a few years old and it was not cheap. Why is it these new parts don't last? Tear into it or can someone recommend me a shop? Thanks guys

Plow Hand, no new paint, she is still in her work clothes.

Im thinkin some metal came loose in there and is shorting out the brushes or a spring came off a brush..Ive taken them apart and hooked the brushes to the wrong fields-sparks and real lazy..(easy to do)I take my starters to A&B auto electric Burnsville MN..952-894-5147..had a new starter drive put in WD-9 sarter..in and out the door $70

I had my SMTA starter changed over to a threaded post, instead of the stud that starter button works against. I put the 2 screws that held the starter button back in, to keep track of them. Starter didn't work. Found that screws I put in were too long and shorted out the fields on starte. Just a possibility

First of all, you have to have continuity between the terminal on starter and ground for starter to operate. If starter does not turn over when hooked to battery while off tractor and you get heavy sparking, it most likely is short circuited. I would remove band, put a piece of insulation like paper under the two hot brush's. If you still have sparks, field circuit is shorted. If no sparks, armature is shorted. Could be through bolt rubbed through insulation, remove one through bolt at a time to check. Often times you can see on a bolt if arcing has occured.
