Glow plugs needed

Hello there - I need to get six glow plugs for my Farmall 460 diesel. Does anyone know the model number /part number of the plug. Also has anyone bought any off eBay? Any recommendations? Also second question - would a battery charger ( 12 volt - 200 amp) hooked to the F460 burn out a glow plug? I was tring to get it started today and I think this happened. Is that possible?

When I was looking at getting a 560 diesel everyone said to get genuine CaseIH glow plugs only. I don't particularly remember why, but I guess in this case they are better.

My CaseIH mechanic emphatically told me to never hit the glow plugs when a battery charger is connected and on. Don't know why but also don't want to find out the hard way. I interpret his instructions to mean the charger can be charging the battery; just don't hit the glow plug button at the same time.

High voltage burns out glow plugs. When you put a fast charger on a battery the voltage can and does get very high depending on state of charge of battery and rate of charge being pushed into battery. Not unusual to exceed 16 volts. Normal regulated voltage of system will not get high enough to burn them out but it is right on the edge. I know nothing about aftermarket glow plugs as all I ever have used were from IH.

Take one of your plugs to the local auto parts house and have them match it up. The last ones I bought were 1/3 the price the dealer wanted.

Yes, hitting the glow plug button with the battery charger on boost will fry them. I can't say with the 460 but the 282 diesel in the 560/656/706 I like to put glow plugs from a 7.3 ford power stroke in. I pull the injectors, chase the threads with a 1/8 inch pipe thread tap and the 7.3 glow plugs go right in. They take less then half the time to heat up. My 656 only needs 15-20 seconds and its off and running, even below freezing. Awesome upgrade. Maybe the 460 is the same glow plug, I'm not sure.

Just wanted to say thank you for the responses. I am sure I burned them out yesterday with using the charged and hitting the button. Live and learn.

Am NOT knocking what works for you, but the glow plug threads are METRIC, M10x1.0. I don"t know how CLOSE that is to a 1/8" pipe tap, but it would probably be a good idea to grab a M10x1.0 tap next time!

Glow plug threads in a 460 are U S threads. I cleaned many over the years. I think it is 3/8th national fine. The glow plug seals on the bottom end with a tapered seat and not in the threads.
