So what's right?

Posted about M PTO a bit ago - now its got me wondering. My parts book shows both the flat PTO cover and also the hump back. It says the humpback is optional. I'm hearing otherwise. When did IH change from one style to the other? One of the tractors is a 49 and the other is a 50, but you know how much things change on a tractor over the years. The 49 is my loader tractor and has been worked pretty hard in its life so there are likely many replacement parts there. The 50 is a parts tractor but more likely to have what it came with as I don't think it was worked nearly as much. It has the humpback.

Since they seem to engage the PTO differently I figured that switching them out might not be a 5 minute deal. I don't use the M for any PTO work other than running the mixer grinder. Maybe it will last a while longer. The seal on the flat cover doesn't seem so easy.

Serial number 27997 or higher came with the splined counter shaft. Late type PTO works for them. Not helping you if the serial number doesn't match. May check the date code on the transmission housing to see if it was put on complete. If its dated late febuary 1941 or later it would be almost a sure bet it has the splines. Could still have the splines if dated before that but it gets less likely the earlier it gets. May just have to look. IH did make some adapter PTO parts but would be like looking for a needle in a haystack.
Last type M pto started in dec. 1942 and was used through the SM.
