F12 Mowing Capability

I have a 1945 GL-25-VO mower, which is really just a 25-V mower built in Geelong, Australia. The cutter bar is 7 ft. Will a Farmall F12 run this mower or should I fit a 6 ft cutter bar instead. I have used the 7 ft mower for several years, but always behind a Farmall M. Thanks.

I can't see why an F12 wouldn't run this mower satisfactorily. I've seen several F12s with mounted 7 ft mowers around here over the years, but never actually saw one in operation. The main obstacle is that the F12 is slower, but if that's not an issue for you, I think it would work fine. Many years ago I cut lots of hay with a 25V and my grandfather's H in the state of Vermont. Not an F12, but fairly close.

It will run it. Sharp sections (knives) and ledger plates are a must, as is a modest stand of hay. Thick hay might need first gear. Pretty slow. Jim

Assuming the speeds in tractor data are correct (L= 2.0 mph) (M=3.0 mph) (H=3.8 mph).

I would be wanting to cut in H (or 3rd gear) the majority of the time. I would be willing to drop to M (2nd gear) on occasion as long as not frequent. L (1st gear) would not be my choice at all. My limited experience with a plain ole sickle is there is such a thing as going too slow. In other words you need to go fast enough for the grass to fall behind the bar as you travel. You can sometimes get away with creep speeds on a haybine as the reel will help clear the bar but a plain ole sickle does not have that and relies on forward travel to clear the bar.

Regardless, you have an M and a h. Try the 7' on the F-12 if it does not work well then move it to the h. I think the F-12 will handle it though.

Thanks folks. I'll see what happens in our Summer. It will probably be cutting hay just around Christmas time!

I've got a No. 12 mower (7' bar) on my F-12. It'll
mow as fast as that tractor will go. My knife is a
little less than ideal, and the grass that actually
gives me trouble is the short wiry stuff. But heavy
timothy or clover, anything with a coarse stem, full
speed ahead.
