IHC 574 flywheel

Dose anyone know what the dimension is supposed to be from the clutch surface to the cover or pressure plate mounting surface of the flywheel on a 1972 IHC 574 diesel engine. I think that the clutch surface on mine has been turned and the outer part was not, when I put in a new rebuilt clutch, the bolts were tight in less than 2 turns from finger-tight.

Hi Redrob, these are the specs that I have:

Flywheel settings for 574:

the flywheel pot depth must be restored to 36.6 mm. this is measured between the flywheel wear face and the clutch cover mounting flange around the flywheel rim
pressure plate face height to mount 31.65 mm finger height 81 mm
fltwheel maching clearence 1.443 inch

Hi Redrob, did you install a 6 pad clutch?
The other problem that can happen is the new clutch pads will ride up on the outer edge where the grove is worn in the flywheel. If the flywheel is not to badly worn, you can grind a little of the outer edge of the clutch pad that faces the flywheel.

MJ in the UK had mentioned about repairing worn out flywheels for 74 series tractors by fabricating a plate that was fasten inside the worn clutch surface.

Hope this helps

Hi Jim, hope you are well. You are spot on with 1.443 inch for the correct depth of the flywheel. The ceremaic clutch plate on these tractors will allways wear the flywheel so by the time it has been faced several times the flywheel has been machined to its limit. Here in the UK we have a clutch rebuilding company who make and fit flywheel inserts. Jim I will be doing my tractor commentry at the Newby Hall tractor show in June along with many more this coming summer. MJ

Hi MJ, good to hear from you, we are all well. Newby Hall was one of our highlights of our UK trip. I enjoyed the tractors and my wife enjoyed the beautiful gardens. Unfortunately we will not be there this year as we have a trip scheduled to see our daughter in Salt Lake City, UT this year.
All the best
