when dealer says, that is the bottom dollar

When dealer says, "that is the bottom dollar", how do you guys keep they conversation going and not let that intimidate you on your offer?

Make adjustments in the terma. Place options on the table. such as: "That FH plow in the weeds goes with it at that price."
Or: "I can't see that price point when they are at least 750 less for similar in Scotsburrow" (local fictitious town) Or walk. Jim

I say "Good luck, I hope you get that for it. Have a good day." Ive walked away many times. I bought an international plow for 150 at auction when two weeks before the same dealer wouldnt drop lower than 300. Being known to a dealer helps also. If he knows you have the money and have bought from them before its been my experience they will deal on something a little easier.

I say "well you have my offer" and walk away.

It usually helps if you can say you can close the deal without "asking the bank, check with the wife, etc..."

I give the dealer what I will pay for item and and my phone number and tell him to call me if wants to take the offer. Several times the phone was ring when I got home.

The problem with buying now is there"s such a demand for quality equipment.I do have a dealer that I"ve bought from for 20 years & we have a good working relationship.I want a good deal,he wants to keep my business.I"ve never found a better deal than the first one he shoots me,,,And i"ve looked around plenty if times.

Yup, at that point it's time to walk away.

Dealers rarely want to deal on "classic" equipment. They figure some dumb city slicker that doesn't know any better is going to come along and see the "pweety wed twaktor" and pay their ridiculous price for it.

So you wait and get it at the auction for pennies on the dollar.

There is no way I would let any salesman intimidate me. Your the one spending your hard earned money. I would make the offer and say thats the best I can do. Tell them it may be worth the price they are asking but you can't pay that. Then be prepared to walk.

i tell saleman's that, oh i'm just looking, later then ask, courious, what 'were' you asking,, after they say their price, i say, well it's a good thing i just looking, telling them i couldn't pay that much while walking away, then see if the dummy would try to stop me and say, lets talk..

Bought a new pickup a number of years back, I made a [u:42468ad5dc]reasonable[/u:42468ad5dc] offer, he said he didn't think the sales manager would accept it. I told him to check with him and call me with a [u:42468ad5dc]yes or no[/u:42468ad5dc], not a counter-offer. I got home 25 miles away and hadn't been home 10 minutes when the phone rang and he asked when I was going to come get it. Most times you have to set a reasonable limit and be prepared to stick to it, no matter how badly you might want it.

All dealers have their "mark-up" on anything, when he tells you that's the bottom dollar you are beginning to get into his sale "incentive" or what he would make off the sale (allegedly).
I would do a bit of research & find what simular kinds of equipment has been selling for around you area, and then hit him with that. If he then acts like you just spit on his boots, make a counter offer on the highest you would be willing to pay today. If this doesn't do it, thank him for his time & explain you were hoping to buy it from him, but that you have others spotted and will continue to look for one to BUY !!!
CASH always helps to sway the price your way, if not, they haven't been in business long enough or he hasn't been selling long enough to know they won't last very long in such a competitive market.

I have been to a ton of salesmanship classes thru where I work. Have had some good and some bad speakers. The one guy who had is act together told me one thing that I follow to this day. "Any item that you are looking at buying that is over $1,000.00 if you don't walk away to think about it at least once, you are a fool". On cars and pickup or any big ticket items, I make it a point to go at least twice. JMO.

I have been looking for a new or fairly new pickup truck, and have been looking on the internet and have found a few I was interested in. Boy it seems like they're (dealers) not interested in any negotiation.

One guy came down 300 bucks... that doesn't seem like much on a $20000+ vehicle There are pictures of them on the lot when the grass and leaves were green. that hasn't been since early October.

Any advice? My old one is rusting up

some of the best advice I ever got was from my grandfather I was lookin for a pickup and he told me you dont have to get the first one that you see, they made a million more just like it.

Last time I bought a pickup the dealer hit me with the bottom dollar. I said if that's the best you can do, I shook his hand and said thanks for you time and headed for the door. it this economy if they don't stop you before you hit the door they'll call you at home.

Bottom dollar and if you say the most you can pay is where the game begins. When people that come to look at tractors and they have to ask the bank, sleep on it, or talk to their wife more than likely they are gone. Most times your first deal with a dealership could be your best as they want your business and service work which the rate is profitable for them.Several times if I dont care for the sales tactics I ask to see the person in charge. Most dealerships wont let the salesman make a deal with out their approval which I personally dont care for and have left if they are gone for more than 5 minutes. That usually gets a response.

(quoted from post at 19:42:17 03/13/13) Cash money always seem to help!

Not when the dealer's asking $10,000 for a tractor that's worth $3500 on a good day...

They can "ask" but that would be the last place I would even shop, way out of line.

well, I can't speak for dealers much, because I prefer not to deal with them. However, I cannot tell you the number of times I have made an offer, and the seller didn't budge. I said, "Understood. Here is my number and my price" I hand them a piece of paper with phone number and price then walk away.

ah, the number of times the phone has rung a few days or weeks later..................
