What size of tractor on a 47 baler?

Whats you ground like? Hilly? Are you pulling a wagon? I pulled a 47 a lot with my 340 but wouldn't want a wagon behind it.

It doesn't take much HP to run the baler. I think a healthy H is plenty of power to run the baler.

Balers are HEAVY though. You want something with some weight to it and good brakes if you're dealing with any hills at all.

Are 300 has been the designated baler tractor for 30 years with the 47. And now we use it on the 435 and handles it perfectly too.

Baled many years and many bales with a straight H , no problem horsepower wise. If you have big hills and full wagons however, you may want more weight for a tractor, M or larger...

I am looking at a 47 baler that the person advertised as "converted to plastic twine". I asked him what he meant by that because my experience has been that the old IH balers worked better with sisal.

He said the owner previous to him tried to run plastic through it and had all sorts of issues. The knives were switched out and the knotters adjusted and they had used plastic twine in it every since. He bought it and used it lightly and has only run plastic twine through it.

That rocking is relative. I have a SMTA w/loaded tire and one set of weights pulling a JD 224T and it rocks enough to give you motion sickness when standing still. Gradually goes away as you pick up ground speed.

I guess my experience is different than most. We did 7,000-10,000 bales/year with 40 horsepower tractors. Then we got a 560, and that was the end of the little tractors. A heavy nine foot windrow is a load for a 40 horsepower tractor. And I'll guarantee the guy on the wagon will agree with me.

Just our experience.

How do you like the 224? I'm watching a wire tie 224 sell in a week and might try for it instead of the 47.

An M, but only if it has an M&W hand clutch added.

Otherwise use a newer tractor with live power.

With a square baler, the horsepower is secondary to live power.

Bale some ole, rank, stubborn hay sometime without live power then get back to us when you get out of the assylum.
