Got the tractor to shut off (thanks old f20). The tractor still has some issues though. It runs best when the spark advance is severely retarded almost to the point of grounding. Advancing it much more, it runs worse. I know it needs carb work. I let the tractor run with the mag advance cover off and spark was sometimes orange and jumping sideways out from the points, and sometimes it was blue. How would I go about actually adjusting the timing. I have done many distributors, but never a mag. I believe it is an ihc f4 mag. I set the points at .13 at the widest point. Anyone know there I can get a new cap. Thanks again guys.

You can also get a cap and parts from The Fordson House Escanaba,Michigan and Standard Magneto Sales Company, Inc. Chicago,ILL.. If your looking for manuals There is a guy on Ebay that has a lot of old tractor manuals. He goes by " 86thILLINOIS" his online store name is L'Ostant Merchantile. Some of books are reprints but they are copies of original and they are nice manuals. I got manuals for my F-20, W-30,and RC Case. If you don't see it on his site email him because he may have it but not have it listed on ebay.

Here is the link again (hmmm, did not work for me either).

If it does not work, just google "Blue Ribbon Service Manuals".

If it runs best with the spark near fully retarded, the timing is a little off.

Try rotating the pair of bolts that help drive the mag 1 hole clockwise (As view from the driver's seat).

If that helps, try repeating the rotation one more pair of holes to see if that improves the operation.

With a good condenser there shouldn't be much sparking at the points.

Here is a weblink to a site that has a manual online. It covers F4, E4A and other magnetos. Just click on the one that says "GSS-5035-Service Manual Magnetos". Not sure what page(s) cover the F4.

Someone on YT gave me this weblink for my husband. I don't remember who - or I'd give them credit for providing the link.

Andrew, Rice Equipment in PA. would have a new cap. At the back end of the mag under the tin cover there are 2 little screws in a plate with many hole. you unscrew the screws and move the plate to change the timming and put the screws back. Move only one hole than test run it. You should hear the mag snap when piston is at TDC.
If you remove # 1 plug put a screw drive in the plug hole and crank slow as piston comes up.

be sure to hold onto the mag end of that coupler because if it has stopped at a spot where the impulse sprig has started to get wound up it'll spin backwards and you could lose track of which hole the two little bolts were in

Turn the engine until it snaps. I would mark it too to see how much you change it.
