Hooking up Super A Fast Hitch Helper Spring--Issues

Super A

Member
I"m in the process of finishing (only been about a year "finishing") the Fast Hitch conversion on my Super A. All that is left is to hook up the helper spring. The problem is I can"t get the holes to line up where the helper spring bracket bolts onto the side of the torque tube. Now, I assume I am doing it right--I am inserting the "tab" on the back of the helper spring bracket into the little hole on the side of the torque tube, where the transmission connects to the torque tube. I tried tightening the helper spring as tight as it would go to shorten it so it would miss the touch control rockshaft and allow me to try to line the holes up but I couldn"t get it short enough--and once I did I am not 100% sure the spring would work like it should without bending.

The only thing I can think of that might be the problem--assuming I am trying to attach it correctly-- is the tab on the helper spring bracket. The original had been broken and a new one welded in place. It looks just like the original, but I am beginning to wonder if maybe it"s too long.

Any suggestions? Am I trying to hook it up right?

thanks,
Al

Well it should work.I have put quite a few on and off and i know they can be hard to get in the but when you get it in place and the bolt in then just loosin the spring and it should work normall. I think that tab you mentioned is about three quarters of an inch long. If you want put it on and send me a picture i can tell you if its right or wrong.

Erik,

I thought about removing the tenisoner bolt on the helper spring, taking it all apart, and then bolting the bracket to the torque tube. But then I wondered about being able to compress the spring enough to get everything back together. As it is, the touch control rockshaft under the gas tank is in the way from allowing it to line up.

Ideas?

thanks!

I need to ask a dumb question. What exactly is the point of the helper spring? Why does the tractor need so much downward tension?

It's not for downward tension. It's to help raise heavy implements on the fast hitch, like a tandem disk harrow.

I wouldnt try to remove the bolt on the spring because im not sure you will be able to get it back together after its hooked up. You should put the pin in the hole and then hook up the other end into the rock shaft and then adjust the spring so you can get the bolt in. I hope you are hooking up to the backet in the rock shaft and not to the top of the rock shaft because not all the rock shafts have that little bracket on them.

Yes I have the correct rockshaft arm. I had wondered about hooking it up on the rockshaft and then using the hydraulics to ease the bracket into position.
