3588 running hot

Was plowing with the 2+2 this fall and the temp wanted to run right up on the red line. Rad has just been off and repaired so it is clean.Checked the coolant level and it was ok . This one has the optional coolant filter. In true redneck tradition, I have never changed it.In my understanding that isn't a full flow filter so shouldn't cause the running hot. causes; bad thermostat? bad gauge? . When I checked the coolant level , it wasn't boiling over but did seem hotter than normal. This was just before thanksgiving in N Wis so air temp wasn't a factor. Were should I start? thanks

Make sure the thermostat is opening fully. Put it in a pan of water and heat it. Also check your water pump. Make sure the belt is tight. Take a look at the impeller to make sure it isn't worn or may not be rotating. Touch the lower radiator hose lightly when the engine appears hot to see if it's hot. Did you have an overheating problem before the radiator repair? Tubes clogged in your radiator will stop circulation. Hal

I would guess first item would be faulty temp sender, dash gauge next, these are high failure parts on 86/88 series, the thermostat can just be removed for a test, water pump not as prone but if you can feel any wobble by shaking fan blade & I mean very slight wobble the water pump main bearing is failing, blow or wash out radiator fins, also check anti freeze for foaming, wont cool if it is, try straight water just as test. This is from 47 years in IH/CNH service.
