surging 48 H

My H is surging. It seems like it is starving for fuel, I adjusted the main jet to no effect. I am going in the carb this afternoon. I adjusted the Governor as per the manual, with the pin free etc. last year and it has run great since. If I go back in the governor what should I look for as far as wear. Any advice on this would be appreciated. My rides are not much fun with brrr brrr brrr brrr.

I think, from the way you describe it, the problem is in the governor. I wouldn't even bother with the carburetor, because too lean carburetor usually results in missing and stumbling and very rarely will cause the surging you are experiencing.

Everything in that governor is probably worn out. Loose and wobbly fly-weights, etc.

Uninterupted fuel supply fools a lot of folks. A friend of mine was having a problem and I went over to help. I asked if he had fuel to the carb and he said he had taken a kine off and there was fuel. After messing for some time I took the feed line off again..and there was fuel...for about five seconds and then the flow dried up..make sure there is fuel, let it run into a container and let it run for a good couple of minutes..start there and then trouble shoot forward!

I vote for lean as well. Clean up all of the passages. I have an M that does that for a few seconds when I leave the gas turned off.

I use that thing every day. How can I still forget that?

Take an unlit propane torch and while it is surging open the valve and feed propane into the intake(Into the air cleaner is OK, or the carb intake hose connection) if it smooths out, the carb is lean. Jim

I had this problem with a W6. took the carb to a shop and had it soaked in carb cleaner for three days. problem went away

My H started surging last fall, I tried adjusting the carb with no results. I don't know why but I decided to pull the main jet out. I let some gas run out then put it back in, fired it up and the surging was gone. I am guessing there was a little water in the bowl (I have an in line filter on the supply line, it was there when I got the tractor).
