size of plow

Hi everyone, i was wanting some oppinions on what size of plow should i be looking for for my 656 rowcrop. Just got the tractor a month or so ago and havent had much of a chance to try it out on any plow but it only has 2500 hours and seems to be in very good cond. Would like to take to the Half Century of Progress in Rantoul, any ideas.

It should also handle a 12-foot harrow will no trouble. Is it a 5 speed with a TA or is it hydrostatic drive?

In Central Mo., 4-16's were all our 706 with the German Diesel wanted. We had some pretty touch clay soil on parts of the land. Other areas, It would run away with the 4 bottoms. Just depends.

In our area anyway, 4-16's would be a load.

3-16's or 4-14's?

There is no sense in tearing up the tractor for a plow day, a garden, or some hobby acreage. It will pull 4 bottoms in lighter soils but a much better match for general purpose plowing is 3 bottoms. 14's or 16's doesn't matter.

Especially, if you've never plowed before. You've got less to deal with when you can just point the tractor and go. The closer to the tractor's capacity you get the more skill and experience it takes to do a good job plowing.

If you've got a lot of acres to cover, and you're limited on time, get yourself a bigger tractor for a bigger plow.

It is more a 3 rather than a 4. Maybe 4 in real easy going, but can normally can plow more in a day's time with a 3 rather than lugging a 4.

(quoted from post at 13:18:23 03/01/13) You mean a disc. A harrow has teeth and comes in sections 5-6ft each

Some strange parts of the country call them a "disk harrow", and a moldboard plow a "turning plow"
BTW, My inputon "moldboard plow" size would preferably be a 3x16", but it should also pull a 4x14" in most soil. Dad pulled a 3x16" with his 460G and the 656 is a little bigger.

We bought a new '67 656 gasser. We pulled a 14" 50plow 8-10" deep. Most all of our soils are sable & ipava loams. In sable soils we ran 2nd so we could pull the TA back in the tough spots. In ipava soil we usually ran 3rd with the TA engaged which let us speed up on the ends.
